Executive Summary: What To Do

Oscar β€” skip the rest of the page until this is in your bones. Below is what to implement, how long to study, and which two apps to try in each job. Play with both picks for a week, then keep the one you actually open. A theoretically better tool you abandon loses to a slightly uglier one you use every day.

The five things that matter

Implement these. Everything else is optional.

  1. Close the book, produce the answer, then check β€” every study session, every subject. Re-reading feels like learning. Testing is learning.
  2. Anki, 20 minutes, every day β€” FSRS switched on at 90%. Five cards still counts. One skip per week, never two.
  3. Sunday 20 minutes with your dad β€” numbers, not vibes: cards, hours, papers vs plan. You owe him (and exam-day you) a report. A miss is a miss, then Monday is clean.

The rhythmWhat a day, a week and a term look like

Every day

  • Anki reviews β€” 20 minutes, blocker on. Max 15–20 new cards per subject per day; reviews are never skipped (one free skip per week, never two).
  • Every study block ends closed-book: shut the source, write the answer from memory, then check. If a method never makes you produce something from memory, it's reading, not studying.
  • Last 20–30 minutes before bed: light recall of today's material. No screens after.
  • 8+ hours, fixed wake time. Under 6 hours is where sleep stops helping and starts costing you grades.

Every week

  • Card-making session: paste the week's notes into ChatGPT/Claude β†’ Q/A or cloze cards β†’ read and edit every card β†’ import on desktop β†’ sync.
  • From DP2 (Sept 2027): one timed past-paper section per HL subject per week, marked against the markscheme, mistakes into an error log. Start Maths AA HL earlier.
  • Sunday 20-minute check-in with your dad: past papers done, hours, cards vs plan. A miss costs the stake; then it's closed. Monday starts clean.

Every term

  • One WOOP per subject (Wish β†’ Outcome β†’ Obstacle β†’ Plan), 10 minutes, written down, plus 2–3 if-then plans with a day, time and place.
  • Re-map the deadlines β€” EE, TOK, IAs, CAS, mocks β€” into the one calendar. Ask the coordinator what changed.
  • Review the system every 8 weeks: whatever isn't working gets changed, not endured. Gamification and novelty wear off; the appointment doesn't.
  • Revisit every earlier topic β€” the 6–8-week spacing rule is what makes May 2028 recall possible.

The first seven daysSetup β€” one small thing per day

  1. Day 1 β€” Anki. Install AnkiDroid and Anki desktop, create a free AnkiWeb account, sync. In deck options, turn FSRS on (it is not on by default) and set desired retention to 0.90.
  2. Day 2 β€” NotebookLM. One notebook per subject. Upload the official IB subject guide PDF (ask your teacher), your class notes and handouts. Generate one Audio Overview for tomorrow's bus.
  3. Day 3 β€” Phone. Install a blocker, whitelist AnkiDroid, NotebookLM, Gemini, ChatGPT and the calendar. Blocking on during study blocks and after 22:00. Precommitment, not willpower.
  4. Day 4 β€” First 20 cards from this week's lessons. One fact per card, in your own words. Review them tonight in the 20 minutes before bed.
  5. Day 5 β€” Deadlines. Ask the IB coordinator for the DP1 and DP2 internal calendar: EE, TOK, IAs, CAS, mocks, and when predicted grades are finalised. Put every date in one calendar shared with your dad. If Oxbridge or US Early Action is even a maybe, say so now β€” early predictions are needed by mid-October 2027.
  6. Day 6 β€” People. Pick one classmate for a weekly Anki-streak comparison now and a Saturday past-paper swap from DP2. Write one WOOP per HL subject.
  7. Day 7 β€” First Sunday check-in. 20 minutes. Numbers: cards made, reviews done, hours. Agree the weekly stake (on inputs, never grades). Then it's closed.

Hours: What 40+ Students Actually Do

Oscar is aiming at 40+. Your teachers gave a clear school floor: about 40–45 hours of work/study per week including all class time, and outside class 2–3 hours/week per HL and 1–2 hours/week per SL. That is not a guess from the internet β€” it is the number to beat. Below is how that sits against the IBO’s official teaching hours, and what 40+ students say on The Student Room and r/IBO.

The 40+ week for Oscar

Hit the school floor every week in DP1. Raise intensity only when the calendar says so.

For 3 HL + 3 SL, the school’s outside-class floor is 9–15 hours/week (3 Γ— 2–3 plus 3 Γ— 1–2). Add a normal school day and you land on their 40–45 hour total week. That matches what high scorers describe as a normal DP1 week β€” not 6 extra hours every night, and not β€œI only study the night before.” Anki’s 20 minutes sits inside those subject hours, not on top.

The official floorWhat the IBO actually budgets

These are teaching hours over two years, not homework:

  • HL: at least 240 instructional hours; SL: at least 150 β€” IBO SL/HL subject brief (PDF). Spread over ~72 teaching weeks that is roughly 3.3 class hours/week per HL and 2.1 per SL.
  • TOK: at least 100 hours of class time β€” TOK 2022 teaching-time breakdown (from the guide: 100 hours minimum).
  • Extended Essay: about 40 hours of the student’s own work β€” IBO Extended Essay guide. That is a summer-plus-term project, not a weekly drip of 40 extra hours forever.

The range is real β€” ignore the 10-hour-a-day-for-two-years story as a plan. In the big r/IBO 40+ routine thread you get a Maths AA HL student at 21–24 hours/week in DP1 and 28–35 in DP2 (high end, and they said 2 hours/day on Maths AA HL alone), a 43 scorer at β€œmaybe just like 3–6 hours a week”, and a 45 scorer who studied ~10 hours every day for two years and had no social life. Those are not three versions of the same advice. For a 40+, the repeatable pattern is: school floor every week, internals finished on time, then a planned ramp β€” which is also what a highly upvoted comment in that thread called the actual 40+ skill: consistency, not a heroic weekly total.

A normal DP1 weekday

  • School β€” full attention. That is already most of the 40–45.

Headline verdict: Anki (with AnkiDroid on Android) is still king β€” and it isn't close on the axis that matters most: scheduling quality over a long two-year horizon at zero cost. Its modern FSRS scheduler is the most accurate, most benchmarked algorithm in any consumer app; AnkiDroid is free and fully supports it (one toggle in deck options β€” it is not on by default); and Anki's one genuine weakness β€” manual card creation β€” is now largely solved by AI generation workflows. A tool you open daily beats a theoretically superior tool you abandon, but Anki is the one to beat.

The science: why this works over two years

  • Active recall and spaced repetition are the two most evidence-backed study techniques, period. Dunlosky et al. (2013) β€” the most-cited review of 10 common learning techniques β€” rated only practice testing (active recall) and distributed practice (spacing) as "high utility." Re-reading and highlighting rated LOW.
  • The effect sizes are big. Roediger & Karpicke (2006): students tested on a passage recalled 61% a week later, vs 40% for students who simply re-studied it.
  • Spacing beats cramming. Cepeda et al. (2006) meta-analysis covered 317 experiments in 184 articles: spaced practice produces substantially better long-term retention than massed practice.
  • Why it fits a 2-year horizon: the optimal review gap scales with your target retention interval (Cepeda et al. 2008: gap β‰ˆ 10–20% of the interval). Cramming is tuned for Friday's test; spaced repetition is literally the algorithm for "still know it in May 2028."

The key distinction from the research: genuine interactive tutors (Socratic dialogue, hint-withholding, comprehension checks) vs. "half-teachers" that answer questions grounded only in your own materials vs. passive summarizers. Predicted grades are the real currency

UK, Canadian and US universities build offers largely around predicted grades β€” which are finalized September–December of DP2, before final exams exist. Predictions are made by YOUR teachers, from DP1 grades, classwork, IAs, mocks and trajectory β€” and the IBO doesn't standardise them; the school owns the process. Everything in Year 1 is evidence-gathering for that prediction.

  1. Map every internal deadline in week 1 of each year. The DP2 pile-up is real: EE final draft, TOK titles (released the first week of September), multiple IAs within weeks of each other.
  2. Choose the EE topic + supervisor in Year 1, term 2; write 30–40 hours of the EE in summer 2027 (the IBO allocates ~40h). Weak IA topics chosen late are the single biggest predictor of a low final grade.
  3. Teacher office hours: regular, prepared attendance fixes gaps AND builds the evidence trail that feeds predictions. Predictions can be challenged calmly β€” with evidence.
  4. Ask for past papers early; ask the IB coordinator for subject reports (examiner feedback), grade-boundary data, and the school's predicted-grade policy/timeline.
  5. TOK is not padding: an E in TOK or EE fails the ENTIRE diploma.
  6. CAS: front-load in Year 1. It can't be crammed in exam season, and it can block the diploma award.

First indications appear on end-of-Year-1 reports (June–July 2027); final predicted grades are issued September–December 2027 β€” BUT for Oxbridge and MIT Early Action applicants, schools finalize them by EARLY-TO-MID OCTOBER 2027. Schools otherwise default to November/December, which is too late for a 15 October UCAS submission. Tell the IB coordinator in Year 1 that early deadlines apply to you β€” don't wait for the school to ask. Separately, schools submit predicted grades to the IBO itself by 20 April 2028 (verified) β€” a different track that feeds the IB's own systems, not universities. Results land 5–6 July 2028.

Watch-outs (pin these to the fridge):
  • Test booking closes ~3 weeks BEFORE the UCAS deadline (~28 Sept 2027 vs 15 Oct) β€” miss it and there's no late entry; the application is dead on arrival.
  • Any source still recommending PAT/MAT/TSA is obsolete β€” Oxford scrapped them in Jan 2026 (re-verified Sept 2026). For your subjects it's ESAT (Physics) and TMUA (Maths/CS).
  • Only the October sitting of ESAT/TMUA counts for Oxbridge β€” the January sitting doesn't.
  • Canadian scholarship deadlines precede admission deadlines (UBC: Dec 1 vs Jan 15).
  • US offers aren't unconditional in spirit: admission rests on transcript + predictions, and a final-year collapse can be re-reviewed.
  • Australia is a 2029 story: don't plan around a July 2028 start.

8+ hours, fixed wake time, last 20–30 minutes before sleep = light recall review, no screens after.

Exercise

Aerobic exercise raises hippocampal BDNF (neuroplasticity), improves memory and attention, and reduces academic burnout (986-student study). 30 min moderate cardio 3–5Γ—/week; walk between study blocks. Pomodoro (25/5) works too β€” a 2025 meta-analysis found scheduled breaks beat self-regulated ones on focus, fatigue and completion.

The phone tension

You study ON your phone β€” but mere phone presence reduces cognitive capacity (Ward et al. 2017: even a silent, face-down phone on the desk costs working memory). Since Anki and NotebookLM live there, use app-level blockers, and for past papers put the phone in another room: Stay Focused (FREE tier; premium ~$3–5/mo), AppBlock (whitelist study apps; $29.99/yr or $89.99 lifetime), Forest (FREE + optional Plus), Freedom (cross-device; $39.99/yr or $199 lifetime); hard mode: Blok, a physical NFC card (card $49 one-time + app sub $59.99/yr) you must physically tap to unblock. Precommitment, not willpower.

What Actually Makes People Hit Their Targets

Two years is a long war. Motivation won't carry you β€” systems will. These are the levers that move the needle, ranked most important to least. Build from the top down.

1 Β· The biggest jump in the data

Weekly progress reports to a person you owe

Gail Matthews, Dominican University, 2007 β€” 149 people, five groups, scored 0–10 on how fully they hit their goals. Writing the goal down helped. Telling a friend helped more. The top of the chart is weekly progress reports: 7.6 versus 4.28 for people who only thought about the goal.

Harkin et al. (2016) found the same engine in 138 studies: watching your own progress works (d=0.40), and it works better when the progress is written down or told to another person.

What you do

  • Sunday, 20 minutes, with your dad β€” never rescheduled, even after a bad week. The appointment is unconditional.
  • Report numbers, not vibes: cards reviewed, hours, past papers vs the plan.
  • He asks and records. He doesn't nag. He doesn't rescue.
2 Β· Stronger than β€œtell a friend”

Owe someone the best version of you

Matthews Group 4 β€” β€œcommitment to a friend” β€” already beats going it alone (6.41 vs 4.28). The upgrade is not a slightly more formal promise. It is owing a person a version of yourself.

Your dad puts it like this: he gets dressed up when he meets friends, and looks like a slob when he's alone in the house. When he meets friends he owes them the best version of himself, so he gets dressed up. Same engine, different room. The Sunday check-in works because you owe him (and exam-day you) a report β€” not because a calendar reminder is magic.

Adam Grant's studies point the same way: fundraisers who met one scholarship recipient logged +142% more phone time and raised +171% more money a month later. Personal-benefit pep talks did nothing. People work harder when a real someone is on the other end of the work.

What you do

  • Turn β€œmy goals” into promises to named people: the weekly report to your dad; a pact with a classmate (β€œswap one marked past paper every Saturday”).
  • A letter from 18-year-old, exam-day you, pinned above the desk β€” you owe that person the work.
  • Pick people whose disappointment you would actually feel. Strangers on a Discord don't count.
3 Β· Strongest lab result

If-then plans & WOOP

Gollwitzer & Sheeran (2006): 94 tests, 8,000+ people, d=0.65 for implementation intentions. Milne, Orbell & Sheeran (2002): a motivation talk moved exercise from 29% to 39%; adding one line β€” β€œDuring the next week, I will do 20 min vigorous exercise on [day] at [time] in [place]” β€” moved it to 91%.

WOOP (Wish β†’ Outcome β†’ Obstacle β†’ Plan): one 30-minute session with 66 high-schoolers produced ~60% more practice questions over a summer (140 vs 84). Try woopmylife.org.

What you do

  • One WOOP per subject per term β€” 10 minutes, written down.
  • Turn each weekly target into 2–3 if-then plans with a day, time and place: β€œIf it's 4pm Tuesday, I'm at the desk doing one timed Maths AA past paper.”
  • Pre-write the miss: β€œIf I open my phone mid-paper, it goes in the kitchen drawer and I restart the timer.”
4 Β· The floor under everything

Write specific, hard targets

Locke & Latham: across 1,000+ studies, specific challenging goals beat β€œdo your best.” Matthews' chart agrees β€” written goals (6.09) beat unwritten ones (4.28). A goal in your head is a wish. A goal on one page, with a number, is something Sunday can check.

What you do

  • One page: target IB total, HL grades, and the weekly inputs that would make those grades unsurprising (Anki streak, papers done, EE hours).
  • Hard but feasible β€” a 42 with 7,7,6 is a target; β€œtry my best” is not.
5 Β· Prices the miss

A small weekly stake on inputs

Volpp et al. (2008, JAMA): people who deposited their own money hit a weight-loss target 47.4% vs 10.5% of controls. Loss hurts about twice as much as gain feels good, so a small stake on whether you did the work is a cheap engine. Stake the behaviour (papers done, Anki done). Never stake the grade.

What you do

  • Something small β€” Β£10/week to a sibling, or to a cause you'd hate to fund.
  • Tied to the Sunday numbers. A miss costs the stake, then it's closed. No shame carried into Monday.
6 Β· A step ahead, not a superstar

A near-peer mentor

Lockwood & Kunda (1997): a role model only pulls you up when they look attainable. Someone 1–3 years ahead, in the score band you want, beats a guru. Last year's DP2 cohort is the pool β€” ask the coordinator for a name. Re-benchmark as you close the gap.

The street pitch β€” why systems beat motivation

Nobody crosses a two-year finish line on motivation β€” motivation is weather, and May 2028 is a thousand mornings away. The people who make it are not more disciplined, they are better PRE-COMMITTED β€” they decide once (a specific hard target, an if-then plan, a weekly appointment with a person they owe) so that Tuesday-at-4pm never gets a vote. A goal kept in your head is a wish; a goal written, scheduled, witnessed and priced is a machine. So don't try to raise your willpower β€” build the machine: one page of targets, one if-then plan per subject, one Sunday check-in with your dad, one small stake on the line. Do that, and crossing the line stops being a question of character and becomes a question of calendar.

  2. 8+ hours sleep, fixed wake time, 20-minute pre-bed recall review. Free; sleep explains about a quarter of the variance in grades, and it can't be fixed the night before.
  3. Anki from day 1 of DP1, FSRS on β€” floor-level daily streak (5 cards keeps it alive) + one free skip/week + a study-buddy pair.
  4. Summer 2027: EE first draft at home + optionally one week of OXSS/IBWISE-style mid-IB booster for the weakest HL (~Β£1–2k) instead of a Β£7k prestige school.
  5. Week 1 of DP1 (now): a single shared calendar of all IA/EE/TOK/CAS/mock deadlines + confirm the school's predicted-grade timeline β€” and if Oxbridge/MIT-Early is even a maybe, tell the coordinator in Year 1 that predictions are needed by early-to-mid October 2027.
